The Vietnam war was a proxy war during the cold war between north and south Vietnam and took place from 1954 to 1973. The reason the war started was because the United States didn't want communism to spread throughout South-East Asia. South Vietnam was anti- communist and had countries like United States, South Korea, Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Thailand, Khmer Republic, Kingdom of Laos helping them in the war because they shared the same ideas. North Vietnam wanted to be a communist country who had allies like People’s Republic of China, Soviet Union, Pathet Lao, Khmer Rouge, and North Korea who shared the same ideas. The US and USSR were two countries that had a big impact on the war. The US helped by sending in troops to fight but after a while president Nixon started pulling out troops. This did not stop the war and eventually the north took over and Vietnam became a communist country.
The Vietnam war had a big impact on the cold war. The US and USSR were both superpowers and had different ideas on how governments and countries should be run. This caused conflict between the two countries and even affected the rest of the world. The US and USSR never directly fought because they both had nuclear weapons and they didn't want to start a nuclear war so instead the helped countries in other wars. The Vietnam war was one of the biggest proxy wars during this time and the US and USSR were both involved and supported different sides. To help the US sent troops to Vietnam to help the south. The USSR didn't send troops but they did give the north weapons and aid. This war was a way for the US and USSR to fight for what the believed was right without directly fighting and starting a nuclear war.
