The Olympics is an event that sets the global political issues aside and brings the countries of the world together with the spirit of fair competition. Unfortunately, during the Cold War, this did not happen. The tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union were so high that, when displayed in front of the whole world, the olympic athletes were used as political tools. This made winning the most important thing in everyone's mind. One of the most recognizable victories for the United States over the Soviet Union was named after exactly what it was, the Miracle on Ice. This refers to the medal-round game of the 1980 Winter Olympics at the Olympic Center Arena in Lake Placid, New York, U.S. The Soviet team was made up of players who have experience in the international level. In contrast, the U.S. team was made up of amateur players. They were the youngest team in the tournament and in U.S. national team history. The Soviet team was clearly the favorite to win. At the end of the first period, the two teams were tied 2-2, but the Soviets took the lead 2-3 at the end of the second. After the third and final round, the U.S. team scored two goals to end the game with their victory 4-3. On the 25th anniversary of this achievement, Sports Illustrated voted it the greatest sports moment of the 20th century. This event affects America even today. With all the horrible things happening around the world and even in our country, it's good to remember these type of events to realize how great the United States of America really is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nfgTJaT_Vs
